LBD for the Holidays

I know I have posted before about the Little Black Dress (LBD), but because it is a closet staple and can be worn in many different contexts, I am posting about another special LBD. Last Friday I attended the St. Jude Winter Gala at the Bowery Hotel with a bunch of friends. This benefit has turned into somewhat of a tradition for me, and this is my third year going. Attendees wear anything from short sequined dresses and cocktail attire to long sweeping ballgowns. It is such a fabulous people-watching event. I found this black silky, swingy dress at a boutique in Boston when I was in college (which is about 5 years ago give or take!) I have already worn it to winter weddings, summer parties, and now this gala. I have gotten so much wear out of it because it is black, simple, and elegant. In the winter I throw on a little fur bolero with it. I was drawn to it because the thick halter straps are very vogue-esque. It also is a very swingy party dress for dancing! I paired this dress with my new hot pink rockstuds! Another great benefit of the LBD is that accessories can take center stage.

I wore my hair in a simple bun and did sophisticated, clean makeup with a red lip. I thought that this combination really allowed the dress and shoes to stand out, and wearing my hair up allowed the fun halter strap to bask in all of its glory. Tomorrow is my new company’s holiday party, so there will be another holiday party look coming soon!

Blanket Scarf for Central Park

November was an incredibly exciting month for me. I quit my job, started a new one, and had an unbelievable spontaneous trip to Turkey in between the two. (Not to mention Thanksgiving, my favorite holiday!) The below photos were taken the Sunday back from all of the excitement and the day before my first day at my new tech startup job. I had a lovely day out and about enjoying New York. One of my best friends, Danielle, got me this comfy and cozy blanket scarf (fall trend alert!) which I paired with a black shirt, dark denim cropped skinny jeans, leather ankle booties, a big tote, and mirrored aviators. This scarf is super comfy, and I brought it to Turkey with me because it doubled as a blanket on my flight! I also ironically brought this bag- it is the perfect size for an airplane carry-on. I stuffed in lots of magazines and all of the essentials. Grays and browns and neutrals are my favorite for fall. I love how chic and sophisticated this look is. This scarf has already been a fall staple for me.

How does it still feel like fall in December?! It was 55 degrees in NYC today.

Checkered Cape Poncho

This past weekend I was in Chicago visiting my (adorable) 9 week old niece, Claire. We were planning on doing a phot-oshoot, but it ended up raining. However, I have the below photos from the previous weekend in the Catskills! It was a perfect, gorgeous fall weekend there. Every autumn, my friends Steve, Nic, and Helene travel there for a fall foliage weekend. We hike, carve pumpkins, eat at Betty’s diner, and relax. Steve’s dad is a vet, and this year we got to see some teeny tiny baby piglets and a two-day old calf. The weather was perfect for me to wear my new checkered cape poncho (that’s a mouthful!). This cape poncho is so easy to wear and you can throw it over anything- I sometimes wear it over yoga pants! It immediately makes you look pulled together and elegant. I paired it with white skinny jeans that I have gotten so much use out of, and I wear white jeans well after Labor Day. These riding boots were on my wish list for years. They are Steve Madden “Rex” boots, and I fell in love with them because of the exposed red zipper. A tall pair of  riding style boots are a closet staple for fall weather.

Enjoy the beautiful fall foliage and the polished autumn look!

Baby got Back (Ruffles)

Today it was 77 degrees, and probably one of the last days I can get away with wearing this black fall dress, a staple transition piece in my closet. I love an unexpected “back”, and the ruffle racer-back strap on this dress is a fun feminine surprise. I paired this dress with some new Vince Camuto taupe strappy sandals- also great for early fall. I pinned my hair up, and I also put on one of my favorite pairs of skull earrings (I have always had a bit of an obsession with skull patterns and jewelry- more to come later!)

Hope everyone is enjoying one of the last few Indian Summer days!

Handkerchief Hem

Greece is one of the most wonderful and beautiful countries I have ever visited. I spent a magical vacation there with one of my best friends, Alex, that will make my future honeymoon hard to top! In preparation for the trip I bought this fun hankerchief hem dress, perfect for exploring the medieval villages we stayed in. I love the deep V-neck front and back, and the patterned print is so fun. I don’t own many pieces that are like this dress, and there is something that is so beachy and resort-y about it which I was attracted to. This is probably my longest post to date, mainly due to the travel pictures I took. Every corner was more picturesque and charming than the next. Each door provided an amazing backdrop for a shot.

My Guide to Santorini:
– Explore the medieval town of Fira (so quaint and charming), and less touristy than Oia and the coastal towns
– Visit a vineyard. Drink delicious sweet Santorini white wine (every day!)
– Visit a Greek bakery and eat a doughy olive roll or chocolate bread ring for breakfast
– Marvel at the thousands of cats throughout Greece
– Oia! Sooo gorgeous. Go to the Perivolas rooftop to watch the Santorini sunset
– Charter a boat and go see the black, white and red beaches. Swim in the volcanic hot springs! (Bring a dark colored bathing suit so the sulfur doesn’t ruin it). Watch the sunset and eat fish right from the sea
– Visit the Atlantis bookshop, rated one of the top 10 bookshops in the world. When you visit, you will see why
–  Hike Ammoudi Bay! Enjoy the beauty. Look out for donkey poop
– Once at Ammoudi Bay, eat dinner on the sea. Maybe take a dip. Glimpse the fresh octopus drying. Eat octopus salad and calamari!
– Hike back up to watch the sunset. Clap with all of the tourists as the last sliver of sun slides into the sea
– Cap off the night with fig gelato! (To die for)

I miss Santorini already! I am already dreaming of returning…

Easy Cotton Dress

The photos below are from my first few days of vacation on Santorini in the town of Fira and the medieval village of Megalochori. The town was so quaint- depicted by a maze of white stucco walls, blue colored doors, and bright flowers peeking over every corner . There was one main church at the center of the village, complete with blue dome roof. The town felt so sleepy and truly is the epitome of charming. My friend Alex and I spent our two days walking around the labyrinth of ancient streets and admiring the simplicity and charm of the village. We also took photos at nearly every corner. As you can see, it was nearly impossible not to!

Our hotel, The Vedema, felt like a rustic countryside villa, complete with surrounding vineyards for miles on end. Brad and Angelina stayed here! Alex and I enjoyed exploring the property. There were various hidden pools, a dungeon-feeling 400 year old wine cellar (for a port tasting!), and romantic candle-lit private dinning areas. Our room also came with a closet that is larger than my Manhattan bedroom…we unpacked even though we were only there for two nights. On our second night we enjoyed a fabulous Greek salad and fish dinner, complete with two older men serenading us with their acoustic string instruments under the moonlight and the glowing church clock-tower.

To get back to fashion though, I wore this soft pink and white patterned dress on my first day, and I have worn it many times since. I bought it from a street vendor a few years ago when I lived in Thailand after falling in love with the interesting pattern and the waterfall cut. I find that the lightweight nature of this dress makes it super easy to pack for trips and to throw in my suitcase. Due to the fact that it is strapless, it is great to wear in hot locations and not worry about leaving pesky tan-lines. The pattern easily hides stains, and it is easy to wash. An “easy” cotton dress is a closet staple! I paired the dress with a few pieces of delicate gold jewelry.

Enjoy the magical pictures of Fira, Santorini, Greece…and the friendly stray dog and cat that wanted to be in a few pictures!

Kate Spade Bleecker Street Opening

Last night I attended the Bleecker Street opening party of Kate Spade New York. The cute boutique carries Kate’s famous purses, wallets, and various accessories. It’s about time Kate Spade opened a store on the iconic West Village shopping street! I think that it is going to be very successful in this location. This particular boutique collaborated with the (also New York-famous) Magnolia Bakery, which is conveniently across the street. I especially enjoyed her whimsical cupcake and cake themed accessories. However, on my wish list for this winter are the below ear muffs with a black satin bow on top. (How Blair Waldorf are these? / Who knew that ear muffs could look so good!) The whole boutique is filled with pink, glitter, bows, and all things feminine- one of the many reasons why I love Kate Spade’s designs. She also makes some killer shoes, and hopefully these will be sold in the boutique soon.

Glitter Flats

One of my favorite purchases for this fall are these sparkly Carvela Kurt Geiger glitter flats. I love the classic slip-on shape and the heel adds just a little bit of height. The glitter is, of course, my favorite part. These shoes are so fun! The midnight black color can spice up any work dress, and they transition well from day to night. I travel a lot for work, so these are easy to slip into once I get to client site. I am sad to be saying goodbye to sandals that show off summer pedicures, but these puppies make the transition to fall easier.

Black Jumpsuit

This weekend I swapped out all of my summer clothes and shoes in favor of my fall wardrobe. I was sad to say goodbye to my bright sundresses and sandals (summer is my favorite season to dress for!) but booties, capes, and cozy sweaters are making things a little bit easier. One piece that I have been meaning to wear all summer, which is a great transition piece into fall, is a black jumpsuit (romper). Black jumpsuits are a closet staple, as they transition easily between seasons and they can also be dressed up or down and used as a “canvas” for fun accessories.

For this West Village shoot, I wanted my hair and makeup to be as equally edgy as my romper and new yellow Jimmy Choo platform sandals. My close friend Alex did a smokey eye, nude lip, and an edgy braided and coiffed updo. Per usual, please contact me if you would like to book her for your next event. She is the queen.

Romeo Hunte SS2016 Presentation “The Focus”

This Thursday I attended the Romeo Hunte Spring Summer 2016 Presentation entitled “The Focus”. The presentation was held at the private residences of the W Downtown.  Although it started nearly an hour late, it was so much fun to people watch as guests arrived. Everyone was beautiful. Everyone (most people) were dressed outrageously. I attended Romeo’s fall presentation, and it was so much fun to see the evolution of his designs for spring and summer. He used a lot of bright colors, I particularly loved the yellows. He also used rich fabrics with different textures. When I first saw the models, it was so cool- many of them had black geisha-style wigs and makeup. They were standing perfectly still and almost appeared to be statues. One model needed to be taken down at one point because she almost fainted. (These models are under a lot of pressure). My favorite piece in this collection is the white blazer-dress in the second picture from the top.

I met a great photographer from Getty, and he and I went to town. He told me that everyone at fashion week loves having their picture taken, which is pretty funny (and expected). My favorite quote of his was, “Fashion Week is great, you get to look at bizarre stuff and drink lots of free alcohol”.
