LBD for the Holidays

I know I have posted before about the Little Black Dress (LBD), but because it is a closet staple and can be worn in many different contexts, I am posting about another special LBD. Last Friday I attended the St. Jude Winter Gala at the Bowery Hotel with a bunch of friends. This benefit has turned into somewhat of a tradition for me, and this is my third year going. Attendees wear anything from short sequined dresses and cocktail attire to long sweeping ballgowns. It is such a fabulous people-watching event. I found this black silky, swingy dress at a boutique in Boston when I was in college (which is about 5 years ago give or take!) I have already worn it to winter weddings, summer parties, and now this gala. I have gotten so much wear out of it because it is black, simple, and elegant. In the winter I throw on a little fur bolero with it. I was drawn to it because the thick halter straps are very vogue-esque. It also is a very swingy party dress for dancing! I paired this dress with my new hot pink rockstuds! Another great benefit of the LBD is that accessories can take center stage.

I wore my hair in a simple bun and did sophisticated, clean makeup with a red lip. I thought that this combination really allowed the dress and shoes to stand out, and wearing my hair up allowed the fun halter strap to bask in all of its glory. Tomorrow is my new company’s holiday party, so there will be another holiday party look coming soon!

Pink & Gold

Last week I attended the Glamour in the City benefit, hosted by one of my close friends from college. I’ve gone every June since moving to NYC, so now it’s pretty much a tradition! GlamourGals supports volunteers who provide ongoing companionship and complimentary beauty makeovers to women living in senior homes. The dress code for the event was…pink. I don’t own that much pink, but I have been waiting to wear the below wispy chiffon ABS by Allen Schwartz dress for quite some time now. The event provided the perfect opportunity to take the frock out on the town! I paired it with my new glittering gold Jimmy Choo wedges. These shoes are so comfortable, and surprisingly, pair well with a lot. Before C. Wonder closed its doors a few months ago, I scooped up some vintage-inspired jewelry. The delicate black and white earrings and bracelet in these pics looked pretty with the pink chiffon. I wore my hair down, but slightly tamed with a skinny black headband.

Thank goodness it’s summer! June is one of my favorite months.

Earth Day Collaboration with Second Time Around (STA)

In honor of Earth Day, today’s post is all about one way we can  reduce our carbon footprint. Luckily for me, my favorite consignment store, Second Time Around, has locations throughout Manhattan where I find my favorite designers at a discount from the retail cost. I have shopped and consigned at many of New York’s STAs, in addition to locations in Boston, Philadelphia and Chicago. When I shop at Second Time Around I am supporting the environmentally-friendly concept of reusing clothing, it’s less expensive than designer retail, and personally I think it is super fun to sort through the racks. No two treasures are the same!

Shopping aside, Second Time Around is a also a fantastic place to consign your gently used (and loved) designer duds. I have been consigning clothing and accessories at Second Time Around for years. You simply can’t keep getting new things without exchanging some old ones. Also, my NYC closet cannot only accommodate new purchases! When I consign, it is like a trade. First I clean out my closet, usually during transition seasons. Then I head over to STA with the items that have served their due time with me. I either get cash or a store credit for the items I consign (which goes FAST if I hang in the store for too long!) I love sorting through the neatly sorted racks of amazing designer-everything. Without fail, I always find an “I can’t live without it” piece.

The images below are a few of my favorite items that I have purchased at Second Time Around boutiques throughout the country. I especially love the periwinkle Jill Stuart dress and the Kate Spade ostrich feather peep-toe heels.

Check out Second Time Around’s website, and make sure that the next time you are thinking of going shopping, you consider shopping second hand.

“Spring” Into Love: Brunch

I am excited to announce a fun collaboration I am doing with NYC Relationship Coach Natalia De Oliveira. We have teamed up to do a two part post on spring fashion for dates! This first post focuses on a daytime (brunch) look, while the next post will be what I would wear to evening drinks for a first date.

Brunch is my favorite meal of the day, and in New York it’s a staple meal. Saturday/Sunday noon – 3pm brunch is pretty standard! For a first date, brunch may be a great option for a more casual dress style day date.

In this first spring look below, I paired a pink and white flowy print top with boyfriend jeans (my favorite) and some fun new gold pointy-toe oxfords that I have been dying to wear all winter. They remind me of nymph or fairy shoes! They are so fun and definitely make a statement. Also, the gold oxfords pick up the gold buttons on the blouse and the gold jewelry I accessorized with. This look would be a good first date look for brunch because it is stylish, yet easy. Bring on those Mimosas!

Stay tuned for the next post, too- a more sophisticated evening drinks “‘Spring’ Into Love” look!

Is it Saturday yet?

Wide Leg Trousers

Wide leg trousers, or culottes, are a big trend this spring. I picked up this pair last September and was able to get away with wearing them through the month until it became too cold! I am really excited that I can bring them out again. Wide leg trousers are a fun alternative to slacks and pencil skirts for work. Pair them with a pretty blouse and your favorite heels. (They are practically begging you to show off your favorite shoes!) I find that wearing them with flats is usually not very flattering, so I stick with heels when I wear them.

I recently wore the look below to work and received a ton of complements. I love the silk menswear-inspired blouse, too! The square oxblood print is such a fun take on traditional polka dots.

Spring is in the air!

Gala Attire: Black Velvet Lace

Last night I attended a benefit to support the Jewish Museum of New York, co-hosted by one of my friends from college. The gala was beautiful, hosted at the Park Avenue Armory (my first time there) and decorated with dreamy crystals hanging above guests and lots of white flowers.

This was the perfect event to wear a black velvet lace dress (the entire back was this gorgeous open lace!) that I picked up a few weeks ago from Yumi Kim. The front of the dress was a simple black silk cutout panel, with the whole back and sleeves made out of unique velvet lace. I paired the dress with my favorite sparkly heels, as I strongly feel that if you are going to a cocktail attire party, don’t miss out on wearing special shoes you couldn’t normally wear!

I opted for a high pony, crystal earrings, and a red lip to complete the look.
