Black Swan

Full skirts are a trend this spring that I wasn’t sure I needed in my closet, until I saw this whimsical black swan print one. I was sold. I needed it. I owned nothing like it, and the thick material felt very rich. The skirt also was available with a black background and white swan print, but it was not the same. (Something about those black swans!) I went for a classic look with a double strand of gray pearls and glamorous over-sized sunglasses, and the sexy criss-cross ankle strap heels are one of my favorite pairs of new shoes. Investing in a simple pair of ankle strap heels is a closet staple, in my opinion, as they are always so flattering. To complete the look, I felt that a ballerina-inspired bun was a must. This look would be perfect for any type of recital or classical performance. (Or if I ever knew I was going to meet Natalie Portman or Mila Kunis…). Black, white and a statement red lip never lets me down.

How gorgeous are the flowering trees in these pictures? New York City is alive.

Oh, and this skirt is less than $20.

Earth Day Collaboration with Second Time Around (STA)

In honor of Earth Day, today’s post is all about one way we can  reduce our carbon footprint. Luckily for me, my favorite consignment store, Second Time Around, has locations throughout Manhattan where I find my favorite designers at a discount from the retail cost. I have shopped and consigned at many of New York’s STAs, in addition to locations in Boston, Philadelphia and Chicago. When I shop at Second Time Around I am supporting the environmentally-friendly concept of reusing clothing, it’s less expensive than designer retail, and personally I think it is super fun to sort through the racks. No two treasures are the same!

Shopping aside, Second Time Around is a also a fantastic place to consign your gently used (and loved) designer duds. I have been consigning clothing and accessories at Second Time Around for years. You simply can’t keep getting new things without exchanging some old ones. Also, my NYC closet cannot only accommodate new purchases! When I consign, it is like a trade. First I clean out my closet, usually during transition seasons. Then I head over to STA with the items that have served their due time with me. I either get cash or a store credit for the items I consign (which goes FAST if I hang in the store for too long!) I love sorting through the neatly sorted racks of amazing designer-everything. Without fail, I always find an “I can’t live without it” piece.

The images below are a few of my favorite items that I have purchased at Second Time Around boutiques throughout the country. I especially love the periwinkle Jill Stuart dress and the Kate Spade ostrich feather peep-toe heels.

Check out Second Time Around’s website, and make sure that the next time you are thinking of going shopping, you consider shopping second hand.

Festival Fever

Festival fever is definitely in the air! Even though I haven’t been able to attend any festivals this year (yet!) I have been majorly inspired by festival fashion blowing up my social media accounts. Festival fashion. It’s a thing!

I’ve picked out some of my favorite festival pieces, from head to toe, in the images below. From flower crowns and headpieces to metallic tattoo jewelry, crochet or tie-dye, festival fashion is pretty fabulous. Although I am beyond obsessed with the Stuart Weitzman gladiator sandals below, realistically they would get ruined in the inevitable mud-pits and your feet would be stomped on. (Plus, tan lines, people). Booties may be more practical.

Three words: Velvet Fringe Kimono.

Enjoy!

Boyfriend Jeans

Boyfriend jeans are possibly my favorite bottoms to wear. I remember thinking that they were unflattering and unusual when Katie Holmes and Reese Witherspoon first sported them a few years ago, sparking a trend. The girls were onto something, though! Boyfriend jeans are comfortable, easy and effortlessly chic. They are versatile and can be dressed up or down. I absolutely feel that they are a closet staple. I love wearing mine around the city in ballet flats with a slouchy sweater, but I also dress them up at night with amazing heels and a pretty blouse. Due to the cuff around the ankles, they are perfect for showcasing your favorite shoes (for all of my fellow shoe girls out there!)

The below look is one of my favorite city-weekend outfits. I paired my boyfriend jeans (which I bought on sale for under $30 at Urban Outfitters, might I add) with a plain tee, some incredible gold heeled booties, and cool downtown-chic jewelry. Now that it’s April the weather is warm enough to not always have to wear a jacket, but you still need to be covered to stay warm. This look is perfect for April weather!

Also, I am beyond obsessed with the jewelry used for this shoot. Lots of gold and beautiful stones- all hand crafted by local jewelry designers. (The earrings may be my favorite…they are subtle snakes and sort of remind me of jewelry I imagine Cleopatra would have worn!) I really love the funky ring, too, though.

Happy Spring! I refuse to wear a coat anymore.

Romeo Hunte Trunk Show

Last night I attended the spring/summer 2015 trunk show for designer Romeo Hunte, hosted in the Tictail studio in the East Village. The entire collection was absolutely gorgeous!!! Romeo incorporated lots of little luxurious touches, such as beautiful unexpected hemlines and amazing detailing on all of his pieces. He also used the highest quality, most gorgeous fabrics imaginable. It was such a cool experience to get to see the models strutting in his designs, and then be able to touch the materials after the show. Also, Romeo names most of his pieces after favorite and inspirational streets in downtown Manhattan, so I, having named my blog after my favorite subway stop (West 4th Street) can completely relate! Romeo designs for men and women. However, I particularly loved and lusted after the women’s collection. Highlights from the show are pictured below. My lust list includes:

– Tweed cropped pant (seen in the picture below with a blue jacket); very versatile and the pant has pockets!
– Aztec-print pleated skirt (the work on this piece was exquisite)
– The entire purple and pink ensemble…how gorgeous is the cut on those bottom’s hemline?
– Beige track suit (so elegant…amazing how Romeo pulled sophistication off in a TRACK SUIT!)
– Aztec-print crop top and black culottes (similar to the culottes/ wide leg trousers I posted about earlier!) This crop top would also look amazing paired with the matching Aztec-print pleated skirt…

At the end of the night I changed into one of Romeo’s masterpieces: a stunning purple sequin dress. This dress was so comfortable and fun to wear, and the best part about it is that you can create unique designs with the sequins. Too fun.

Romeo is incredibly talented and his spring/summer 2015 collection reflects his unique and meticulous attention to detail. You could feel the creative energy in the studio. I can’t wait to see what Romeo’s future collections hold, and I am so glad that I flew in from DC for the night just to make it to this incredible event.
